Elementary students learn how to take turns speaking, how to raise their hand when they have a question or comment, and how to ask appropriate follow-up questions. Older elementary students work on preparing before a discussion, including how to read for appropriate information at home and how to use that preparation for informing the student’s participation in class.

The history curriculum in Red Wing includes a comprehensive study of world history. Students explore the slave trade of the 1600s and explain the impact that slavery had on the economic development of the New World. The moral and ethical issues of slavery are discussed as well. Chalk Talk: Fail-Safe Note-Taking Methods

Some students struggle when taking notes because they aren’t sure what information they should write down. But there are several techniques they can use to help themselves focus in on the most important details. Using webs is a popular trend, wherein the student connects phrases and ideas together with circles, lines, and arrows. This method is highly effective for visual learners. If students need to be able to compare information quickly, t-charts and Venn diagrams work very well. When there is an enormous amount of information, outlines are good for keeping things organized. Outlines also give structure to notes that allow students to list many significant ideas as well as the supporting details for each. Students who want to work on developing their note-taking skills should also ask to look at their peers notes to get ideas on organization, short-hand and other useful tips.
