Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Redding District Curriculum

Beginning in elementary school, students explore a variety of academic content areas such as mathematics, reading, language arts, science, and social studies. Students also take physical education, library/media art, health, and music to enhance their learning. A variety of elective coursework, community service projects, awareness campaigns, and extracurricular activities are also offered at the high school level to enhance the educational experience.

The reading and writing curriculum, within the language arts standards, is intended to support written communication skills in all courses. Students are expected to read grade-appropriate prose and poetry with proper accuracy, rate, and expression. When writing informative (explanatory) texts, fourth graders should group related sections or paragraphs in some way (i.e.: using headings); include illustrations or multimedia that enhance the topic they are writing about; and use domain-specific terms, facts, definitions, concrete examples, and quotes to develop the topic. Students are expected to produce clear, focused, and organized writing.

Chalk Talk: College Visits

You or your student know that college is in the future, but are unsure where to start the process. A college visit can be a great idea to help learn more about majors, different types of colleges, and what might be a best fit for you. Check out your area to see what types of schools and universities are close by. Contact the college in order to arrange the visit and tour. It is probably not a good idea to simply show up. Colleges want you to visit and they want to be prepared for your arrival. Once you arrive, you will most likely be paired up with a college representative who will give loads of information on the school and will guide you on your tour. This will allow you to see the facilities including classrooms, dorms, student centers, and a variety of other campus hot spots. Be sure to ask questions and take notes if needed. Use the visit to really learn about the college to see if might be a fit for you.
