Chalk Talk: Benefits of a Late Start to the School Day
Mornings can be tough for kids. Not getting enough sleep causes many kids to drag into their morning classes and struggle to concentrate. To alleviate this problem, some schools have implemented a late start to the school day. In locations where this change has occurred, highly positive results have been found. Student tardiness and absenteeism is greatly reduced, particularly in the morning classes. There is also a reduced incidence of students using coffee, soda, and energy drinks to stay awake. This, in turn, improves kids’ health as their intake of caffeine is reduced. With better health and improved attendance, class grades and test scores both go up. These improvements in academic achievement are seen across the board, both in core classes and electives as well.
