Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Reston District Curriculum

Language arts courses in Fairfax County Public Schools emphasize communication skills in many areas, including writing and speaking. Group assignments, interviews, and presentations are utilized in these courses, as are classical and contemporary texts. Students in grades K-5 will learn basic strategies to increase reading comprehension, as well as learn to use information from a variety of sources. In advanced courses, students are required to demonstrate the acquisition of research and critical thinking skills through writing assignments.

In physical education courses, students are required to demonstrate competence in a variety of physical activities that include both individual and team sports. In all grade levels, students will learn how to incorporate physical activity into their daily lives. The ability to work with peers will also be emphasized, in addition to specific fine motor skills and game strategies. In high school, students can choose to participate in specific activities, such as aquatic and dance.

Keeping Informed: Recent Reston Educational News

  • South Lakes High School Student Demonstrates Athletic Excellence - A soccer player at South Lakes High School was one of four students awarded the Student-Athlete of the Year award in December. The student’s high school years focused on community service and academic and athletic achievement. The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum hands these awards out to students who demonstrate athletic excellence.
  • Dogwood Elementary School Teacher is Outstanding - A first grade teacher at Dogwood Elementary School was recently named the FCPS 2014 Outstanding First Year Teacher. At the FCPS Honors ceremony, the teacher mentioned her desire to treat each child as an individual and pay specific attention to their cultural and intellectual development. Student teachers have also noticed her dedication to her students.
  • Hughes Middle School Teacher Recognized for Teaching Skills - A Hughes Middle School teacher was chosen to receive the 2014 VTEEA Middle School Teacher of the Year award. The technology and engineering education teacher regularly provides “high-quality instruction that is learner-centered.” Lessons focus on problem solving, gain technological skills, and designing projects.

Chalk Talk: Non-Core Academic Programs

The family and consumer sciences curriculum is focused on preparing students to make responsible decisions with regard to creating a safe and healthy environment in which to live. Elementary school students learn about proper food storage, identifying the types of foods that need to be refrigerated. Students also learn about sanitation, both related to food and with regard to washing hands before preparing food. Learners identify the various components of a healthy diet and create sample diets according to the requirements of the food pyramid. Students are also introduced to common kitchen utensils and learn how to utilize them in a safe manner. Teamwork and communication are emphasized, particularly with regard to completing essential household duties. In this regard, students learn the value of having each community member contribute to the operation of their society.
