Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Rhinelander District Curriculum

Rhinelander’s elementary learners get an introduction to biotechnology as part of Rhinelander’s technology and engineering curriculum. Students examine the ways in which agricultural waste can be recycled. They also discuss the procedures used in packaging agricultural products. Plant growth, cell functions, and germination are important topics of study as well. The science of refining agricultural waste into biofuels is also explored. Students identify the many uses of biofuels, and analyze how the growth of the biofuel industry will impact other fuel industries and non-renewable energy sources.

The high school art and design curriculum focuses in part on art and design history. Students identify the many ways in which artists express opinions and ideas through their art. The cultural influences of various artists are explored as well. Students also identify the similarities and differences between art from various cultures in order to get a clearer picture of the commonalities art has in different parts of the world. The way that design has changed over the course of time is examined. Students look at architecture as a prime example of how aesthetics are not static, yet a fluid representation of the times.

Chalk Talk: Why Social Studies Is Important

No other subject bears as much weight in preparing students to be responsible citizens as social studies. By learning about past people and events, students today gain some perspective concerning why the world is the way it is. By examining the failures and successes of those that have come before them, students are able to develop a clear picture of what it means to make positive contributions to the world. Social studies is similarly important because it promotes the development of strong practical skills. Students learn how to be good consumers of information, how to solve problems, and how to communicate effectively. Participating in social studies courses also opens students’ minds to the perspectives of others and helps them learn how to be respectful of the differences that make each of us unique.
