Richland District and Curriculum

Richland Public Schools wants children to have positive experiences with their education. The use of the Core Curriculum State Standards allows the educators to have a starting point, and then they add their own little touches to help each student realize their individual learning potential. Students are also able to develop their interests and connect knowledge to core subjects through the enrichment programs, electives and extracurriculars which are offered.

We currently cover the following Richland-area school district: Richland Public School.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Richland District Curriculum

Richland Public School tries to teach across the curriculum if possible. This means that a story or book may be introduced on Monday and through discussions or exercises, the students are able to cover all of their subject areas through this book. The Language Arts objectives for the week are placed into “I Can…” statements such as “I can identify fact and opinions.” Students will have enough confidence and skills to complete a Senior Project where they will observe a business, keep a journal and present a problem/solution paper, a portfolio and an oral presentation to judges.

In Mathematics, the concepts that are taught in kindergarten include counting and writing to 120. Further along in their education the children are taught to tell time to the nearest five minutes. Then in intermediate school, these children can see what they have learned though “I can…” objectives and would be able to say “I can name, locate and plot points in a quadrant.” These students are then prepared to face the advanced mathematics that will come their way in high school.

Chalk Talk: How to Encourage A Child to Write

Most people need to develop some sort of writing skills, including children. Here are a few ideas to help make writing fun for kids. First of all, develop a love of the written word in the child. Find what their favorite type of story is and then read to them often. This helps the process of realizing that words on the page can become adventurous worlds. Next, show the child how writing can be a part of their imagination. If the child asks to have a story written out, try to do so using every silly word that they may say. Or, another activity is to develop and write out a mystery with a child, with a solution to the puzzle. When a child sees how much fun writing can be, they will be excited to do so on their own.
