At the high school level, students have a great many options that include a focused academic experience to one that combines work and learning to prepare them for a particular career after graduation.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Richmond District Curriculum

K-12 students follow a curriculum developed at the provincial level by the British Columbia Ministry of Education called Prescribed Learning Outcomes (PLOs). This curriculum upholds an expected average level of learning skills and knowledge for all students throughout the province. The Ministry also approves administration of Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate programs and provides support services for students requiring additional help throughout all BC schools.

The Prescribed Learning Outcomes direct the learning outcomes in each subject, for example in Math the skills of numeracy, operational sense, geometry and spatial awareness, algebra, and data analysis are all focused on in terms of how to build student ability over the years. The topics progress in complexity but build upon previously learnt content. Likewise, in the sciences, students receive an education both in the processes of observing and testing phenomenon and the knowledge central to each discipline such as earth science, biology, chemistry or physics.

Chalk Talk: The All-Important Cover Letter

When seeking full-time or career-level employment, a resume or a simple application just won’t do. Students need education that will aid them in getting the attention of a potential employer. In addition to highlighting skills and formatting in a professional manner, as well as a general greeting of “To Whom It May Concern”, proper grammar and spelling is a must. If job experience is lacking, all hope is not lost. A well-presented cover letter can still highlight exactly why an employer should choose you simply by focusing on social skills, activities, and accomplishments. Are you good with people? Do you have a skill that would benefit the position you’re applying for? A unique talent or accolade? Focus on that aspect of yourself, and stand out from the rest of the applicants.
