Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Richmond Heights District Curriculum

The world languages curriculum in Richmond Heights allows students to develop the necessary skills to communicate in a language other than English. The high school curriculum focuses on three separate levels of communication. At the interpersonal level, students take part in one-on-one and small group conversations in which they practice speaking and listening in a new language. Students utilize the context of the conversation to develop an understanding of unfamiliar words and phrases.

In Social Studies, students learn about the founding of our nation, world history and geography, and about cultural events and changes in society. Literacy with primary resources and the ability to conduct historical research are aspects of learning as well. Seminal documents in U.S. history are examined as well. This includes the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. Major Supreme Court decisions are also explored, including those in the Warren Court, which sought to protect the right of due process.

Chalk Talk: Benefits of PE Courses

As childhood obesity rates in the U.S. continue to rise, the importance of a sound physical education curriculum increases as well. Children not only need to learn about how to stay physically active and fit, they also need to learn about wellness and nutrition. Fortunately, physical education classes teach these valuable lessons. Additionally, physical education courses offer students a daily opportunity to get active. Since some kids are relatively sedentary in their home lives, their P.E. class may be the only time that they are running, jumping, playing, and burning off calories. This physical activity during the school day also helps kids burn off pent-up energy that has accumulated during class. Running around and playing games or sports for even just 10 minutes in the morning and afternoon will help kids concentrate better in class. This daily physical exercise is also a great way for children to let go of the stressors of school.
