Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ridgefield District Curriculum

All public school districts in New Jersey align their curricula to the rigorous standards in the Common Core Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. In doing so, districts ensure that students receive a standards-based education regardless of the district they attend. Both districts have properly aligned curricula that engage students in acquiring knowledge in all core areas.

The science curriculum includes an examination of plate tectonics and their associated forces. Students examine the “Ring of Fire” and identify reasons why that area is tectonically active. Students acquire an understanding of how areas of land are created through deposition and destroyed by erosion. The earth’s magnetic field is studied, and students learn why geomagnetic north is different from geographic north. Conceptual models and data collected during earthquakes are used to explain the mechanisms of plate tectonics. Students also use data to determine the rate at which the seafloor is spreading due to plate movements.

Chalk Talk: The Value of Extracurricular Activities

Before or after school activities offer children a great way to expand their learning, connect with other students, and learn skills that may not be taught over the course of a regular school day. Whether it’s a club, intramural sport or volunteerism, students who engage in extracurricular activities gain a lot of benefits. Extracurricular activities teach teamwork and leadership skills that are highly valuable in education and the workforce. Joining clubs or organizations and serving in leadership roles look great on college and job applications. Students who take part in extracurricular activities also learn excellent time management skills as they learn to juggle the demands of activities, school, homework and family.
