Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Rifle District Curriculum

The mathematics curriculum in Rifle is designed to make math relevant to daily life by focusing on skills that are applicable in a variety of contexts such as problem-solving, following procedures, and showing one’s work. Younger students work on developing a strong foundation in the basics of math, including multiplication and division, basic geometry, and fractions. Students in the middle grades should be able to apply proportional relationships, draw inferences about populations based on samples, and solve problems involving volume and area of various shapes.

The visual arts curriculum in Rifle provides students with opportunities to explore painting, pottery, drawing, and other visual mediums. Students learn how to interpret works of art and analyze the artist’s intent. Conveying meaning, emotion, and feelings through art is also part of the curriculum. Students make connections between art and other subjects, particularly history and technology, and gain insight into how these areas have influenced artistic expression in the past and continue to do so today.

Chalk Talk: Value of Community College

There are many benefits that community colleges offer to graduating seniors. First, community colleges are much less expensive than their four-year counterparts. Students can complete their first two years of a four-year degree for a fraction of the price. Second, community colleges offer many cutting edge programs to meet the needs of the workforce. For adult learners, the opportunities at community colleges can mean significant career advances. Degrees and certificates in the medical field, green technologies, and computers are but a few that students can take advantage of to get a well-paying job. Lastly, community college is a good choice for students who have other obligations such as work or family. Flexible scheduling, online courses, and smaller class sizes all help busy students meet their family needs while achieving their educational goals.
