Educating Our Parents: Understanding the River Edge District Curriculum

Curriculum development in all New Jersey schools is undertaken with the guidelines of the Common Core State Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards in mind. The former outlines the knowledge and skills students should acquire in math and language arts classes. The latter establishes benchmarks for learning in the following areas: the arts, health and physical education, 21st Century life and careers, languages, technology, science, and social studies.

A central component of the language arts curriculum is instruction in how to be an effective writer. The elementary school curriculum focuses in part on how to structure writing, with a defined introduction, well-supported body paragraphs and a conclusion. Students also learn about different types of writing, be it persuasive, creative or a narrative. The middle school curriculum gives students further instruction on writing narratives. Students learn how to tell a story by unfolding its events in a natural and logical manner. The high school curriculum gives students the opportunity to write informative, persuasive, and narrative works.
