Educating Our Parents: Understanding the River Oaks District Curriculum

The Social Studies curriculum at Castleberry Independent School District includes the study of American and world history, government and politics. economics, culture and society, and geography. The social studies curriculum is also where students develop significant skills in reading non-fiction, informational texts, and they're ability to critically read these texts is emphasized. Students also conduct research in this subject that builds their library skills and their knowledge of how to properly use other sources.

One new focus of the Science and Math curriculum is the introduction of STEM learning which also introduces technology and engineering concepts into learning. Innovative programs in robotics, bio-engineering and other topics are offered. The workshop aspect of this curriculum is part of an initiative that utilizes the three-pronged approach of equity, inquiry, and computer science concepts in engineering instruction. The program will not involve lectures but will instead be centered on experimental—not structured—learning.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Good Communication Skills

The key to success in any endeavor is communication. Communication is more than just talking to another person. It also entails listening and watching for cues that someone gives through facial expressions and posture. Learning to read another person’s cues and actually listening to what they have to say will make you a better communicator. Written communication is another form of communication that is important for your child’s success in school and in life. Your school is striving to provide your child with a foundation of communication skills that will help him or her be successful in school and be prepared for college and a career. You can be a part of preparing your child for school by teaching good communication skills at home. Always listen to what he or she has to say and provide a model by being a good communicator yourself.
