River Vale District and Curriculum
River Vale, New Jersey students in preschool through the eighth grade attend the River Vale Public Schools. There are three schools in the district, which has a total enrollment of nearly 1,400 students. High school children in public school can attend Pascack Valley High School along with students from the neighboring borough of Hillsdale, or they can apply to attend the Bergen County Technical Schools, which has campuses throughout Bergen County. Together, these districts strive to provide students with a comprehensive educational program that prepares them to be socially, economically, and politically active citizens who have a love of lifelong learning.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the River Vale District Curriculum
The curricula of the River Vale, Pascack and Bergen County districts are based on the recommendations of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and the Common Core State Standards. By aligning curricula to these standards, the districts ensure students, regardless of the school they attend, receive instruction that is based on best practices. This alignment also ensures that teachers utilize common instructional strategies and assessments to gauge student learning.
As part of their language arts studies, students in sixth grade through the twelfth grade learn literacy skills as they pertain to the study of science and technical subjects. Students acquire the ability to identify key ideas and details in scientific texts. They learn how to differentiate between scientific facts and speculation using reasoned judgment. Students learn to follow step-by-step procedures for conducting experiments as well. Synthesis of information from various scientific and technical texts is another skill students gain as part of their scientific studies. Students can then interpret data in order to develop an understanding of scientific processes.

Keeping Informed: Recent River Vale Educational News
- Honors Choir - Choir students from Pascack Valley High School have been selected to participate in the Region I North Jersey Honors Choir which will give the chance to perform in a wider range of musical events and competitions.
- Meet and Greet - Members of the Pascack Valley High School social studies department recently met with United States Supreme Court justices. The Teaching American History Grant brought the teachers and justices together to discuss the teaching of social studies in school.
- Model U.N. Competition - The Model U.N. teams from the Bergen County Academies recently won a number of individual and team awards at the Yale Model U.N. Competition. This is a multi-day event in which students adopt a country and participate in UN-like activities and conferences to learn more about foreign relations.

Students also gain communication skills, teamwork and collaboration skills and good sportsmanship skills. And students who participate in PE classes also do better in school.
