Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Riverton District Curriculum
With regards to English Language Arts, the elementary schools emphasize “comprehensive balanced literacy,” which means that students can perform different sorts of reading tasks in a variety of contexts. Students learn at the elementary level through intensive reading practice; this might mean as much as three hours of reading and writing per school day. The balance of literacy includes group reading, independent reading, and writing about texts.
The middle and high school Language Arts curriculum is designed in a series of themed units, which provide a thematic context in which students and teachers have flexibility to cover the major goals and topics. These themes, such as “character,” “perseverance,” “city life & country life,” “power and ethics,” and “moral ambiguity,” allow students to discuss timeless themes while still practicing necessary skills. Students learn to work with a wide variety of literary and informational texts and to offer critiques and analyses of them.
