Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Robstown District Curriculum

Geography is a part of the Social Studies curriculum. At Robstown Independent School District, students begin this study by learning words that have to do with directions. Many of the words are familiar, such as near, or far, but some they need to learn what they mean like north, or west. After they have mastered these words, they begin to become familiar with the world around them beginning with the state of Texas. They discover the landmarks, events and settlement patterns that led to people settling here. They then learn the same about the United States and other nations.

Geometry is a part of the mathematics curriculum at Robstown Independent School District. This course concentrates on the math that is involved with shapes. The students begin by learning the basic characteristics of simple shapes like triangles, squares and circles. As the students progress, the shapes become more complex, as does the math surrounding them. The students discover how to find the perimeter, and area of shapes and how to find the diameter and radius of circles. They also study angles and how to use this to solve other equations that require them to use spatial reasoning.

Chalk Talk: Understanding Test Terminology

Test results can be difficult to understand if there is confusion in the terminology. There may be a number of scores listed but it may be difficult to understand. A raw score tells the number of questions that had correct answers on the test and does not tell any true information. Standard scores take into consideration other students of the same age and grade. These are represented as a part of a normal curve. When test results talk about grade or age equivalent scores they look at the way a student answers the questions and then tell what level the student is at, according to this test. For these results a third grade student may be given a score of 6.3 in reading. This means that when the student reads, they are reading the material the way a sixth grade student would read it. The percentile rank compares this student with others that took the test while a stanine rates a student on a scale from 1 to 9, where 1,2,3 are below average and 7,8,9 are above.
