The North Carolina State Standards of Learning emphasizes the importance of building a strong foundation as the integral step when providing children with a good basis to learning mathematics skills. The math standards focus on the comprehension of core concept and practice that begins early. Students are taught to justify their math skills by explaining the reasoning behind their answers, which demonstrates their mathematical understanding.
Standard level English courses fulfill the requirements of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, to include English Language Arts (ELA), literacy, history/social studies, science, and technical subjects. Students must learn to read, write, speak, listen, and use language effectively across a variety of subject areas. The Standards encompass a vision of what it means to be a literate person in today’s world. The skills learned in school are meant to also meant to be used outside the classroom too, such a workplace situation.

Keeping Informed: Recent Rocky Mount Educational News
- Knowledge Master Academic Competition - Knowledge Master Open is a contest designed to boost learning and recognition for academic achievement. The contest runs on a classroom computer and allows middle and high school students to compete with other students throughout the world. A team of students from Southern Nash Middle School scored 1,259 out of a possible 2,000 points – earning this team highest score in the state.
- Governor’s School - Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools has a group of students attending this year’s summer Governor’s School session. Governor’s School of North Carolina is a five week’ summer program for intellectually gifted high school students. The summer curriculum focuses on specific and unique subjects and each student will have the opportunity to delve deeper into a subject and learn by interacting and discussing topics.
- Battle of the Books - Thirteen Nash-Rocky Mount elementary schools took center stage during the 4th Annual Nash Community College, Battle of the Books competition. The competition recognizes students for their dedication to read. Students were asked questions about 14 different novels – Williford Elementary School took 1st Place in the competition.
