Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Rocky River District Curriculum

The mathematics curriculum in Rocky River follows the guidelines of the new Ohio Learning Standards. To build a solid foundation in math, the kindergarten curriculum focuses on the acquisition of basic skills. Students learn the names of numbers, as well as the proper sequence of numbers. A familiarity with operations is gained, including an understanding of addition and subtraction. The beginnings of base-ten are formed, with students working with the numbers 11-19 to get a better feel for place value. Students also learn basic geometry, identifying, describing, and measuring various shapes.

Rocky River social studies students focus their learning on American and world history, government, economics, geography, and contemporary issues. The economics component of the curriculum helps students develop financial literacy skills that will facilitate effective management of limited funds and allow them to plan for future financial stability.

Chalk Talk: Tips for Taking the ACT

Taking the ACT can be an anxiety-provoking experience for many students. If your child is worried about their exam, there are several ways you can help them prepare ahead of time to reduce their anxiety. First, reiterate that your child needs to read the instructions and each question very carefully. While it seems like a simple enough task, many students miss critical information by simply skimming over the instructions or questions. Second, remind your son or daughter that they need to complete the easy questions first. Doing so will help them stay on pace without spending too much time on difficult questions. If time is running low, your child should go back and fill in an answer for every question, even if they guess. Leaving questions blank will negatively impact their score. Lastly, there are many books and online tools that provide practice tests and other study aids. Provide these tools for your child in order to familiarize them with the ACT.
