Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Roscoe District Curriculum

Hononegah High School understands that students are entering an increasingly complex global economy. Therefore, it is essential that these students be prepared for global changes in technology and other factors. Students must respect diversity and be comfortable with it. They must also accept personal responsibility for their own learning, which will lead to a sense of fulfillment. Students who take control of their own academic needs are more likely to become engaged, active citizens who will contribute not only to their local community but their global community.

Hononegah stresses critical thinking skills and analytical writing skills in the classroom and students are regularly assessed on their higher order writing abilities. The school also encourages students to be involved outside the classroom, in academic and special interest clubs as well as arts, music, and athletics, in order to promote holistic development of the child.

Chalk Talk: Recommendations

When asking for recommendations from teachers, it’s important to consider the weight of the recommendation; what will this recommendation do for you? Many times, this means thinking about the subject and how that applies to your future major. A students who wants to major in engineering, for example, probably shouldn’t ask an art teacher for a recommendation; math and science teachers are probably going to carry more weight. But someone who wants to major in art should definitely ask an art teacher. If you don’t have a major in mind, a good rule of thumb is to ask one teacher who is either a math or science teacher, and another who is either an English or humanities teacher. The math/science teacher can speak to your study skills, class participation, and the like, whereas an English or humanities teacher can speak to your writing abilities and critical thinking skills.
