Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Roselle District Curriculum
The primary force behind the district’s curriculum is the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. These standards provide guidance for curriculum development in the following seven subject areas: social studies, technology, 21st Century life and careers, health and physical education, visual and performing arts, world languages and science. The math and language arts curricula are developed according to the Common Core State Standards.
As part of the 21st Century life and careers standards, students explore potential career options and gain awareness of the skills they need to be competitive in the technologically-driven 21st Century workforce. Beginning in the elementary grades, students acquire an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed for common jobs, as well as those required for non-traditional careers. In middle school, students identify their personal interests, skills and aptitudes, and begin to develop a plan to explore careers that match those criteria.

Chalk Talk: Get Your Child Involved in Sports
Today’s climate of high-stakes testing of students means that, for some kids, participation in sports is being supplanted by after-school tutoring sessions or longer periods of study time at home. While it’s important to dedicate a sufficient amount of time to studying, removing sports from a child’s life is more than just detrimental to his or her health and fitness. Kids who are involved in sports typically are more organized and more efficient with their time. Engaging in sports promotes self-esteem, self-confidence and fosters social relationships with other students. Learning to work as part of a team and developing the skills they need to be cooperative and productive workers are yet more benefits of playing sports. Lastly, participating in sports gives kids a sense of pride and accomplishment when their hard work and effort pays off. These on-field benefits translate into better focus in the classroom and increased academic performance.
