Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ross Township District Curriculum

North Hills School District takes seriously their responsibility to provide education to both special needs and gifted students, implementing individual testing and plans with parental permission for students suspected of needing supplemental help. They also have implemented the Reading Reinforcement Program to reinforce reading skills in their elementary schools using both Title I funds, when eligible, and other budgeted moneys to make absolutely certain that their students have all the tools they need to succeed in their education.

North Hills School District has also worked hard on their technology program. They focus on not only teaching their students various technologies they will need, but also on giving students opportunities to implement them through individual and group projects. They are taught technology related skills beginning with learning how to use computers in elementary school to topics such as programming in high school. In this way, students are prepared to enter a world full of technological advances after they graduate high school.

Chalk Talk: Learning English as a Second Language

Learning English can be a challenge for anyone. For this reason, for many students, it is worthwhile going to an English class especially designed for English language learners. But learning a language takes more than going to class. It requires practice. It requires students to use daily what they are learning. It requires students to try, and sometimes fail, at speaking perfectly in order that they can try again and succeed. Learning English takes time, a reason to learn, and motivation to keep learning. Good English language teachers can provide this type of learning environment. But the more students want to achieve proficiency in the language, the easier it will be for them to learn. Many schools have English language resources for students who need them. While the large school environment in which all their learning is in English may be difficult for these students at first, it may prove the perfect learning environment for them to apply the English skills they learn in their English language classes and really master the language, giving them a good foundation to succeed in their learning environment.
