Educating Our Parents: Understanding the RoxburyTownship District Curriculum

Curriculum development in the Roxbury School District is primarily driven by the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. These standards outline specific learning targets for students in pre-Kindergarten through the 12th grade, and govern the following subjects: 21st Century life and careers, visual and performing arts, technology, social studies, health and physical education, world languages and science. Math and language arts classes are developed according to the standards set forth in the Common Core State Standards.

The health and physical education standards in the Roxbury School District are designed to provide students a foundation for physical, emotional and social well-being. A primary component of the curriculum is teaching students about drugs and medicines. Students in the elementary grades are taught about basic medicines, learning the difference between prescription medications and over-the-counter medications. Students learn about warning labels and gain an understanding of why medicines should be administered as directed.

Chalk Talk: How to Improve Academic Achievement

Improving your test scores or overall grades is often a matter of using some simple strategies to keep yourself organized and on task. Consider having a folder for each class. Keeping your assignments organized by class will help you keep track of everything. In class, be sure to take notes and pay attention to teacher lectures. Keep yourself engaged in what you’re learning by being inquisitive and asking questions. When you have a test coming up, be sure to set aside a specific time each night to study. Make sure your study time is uninterrupted and that you have peace and quiet so you can retain what you read. If you study with a friend, be sure to keep on track and minimize your distractions. If you follow these easy steps, you will be more organized and your grades will begin to improve.
