Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ruston District Curriculum

The Lincoln Parish School System is beginning to implement the state approved Common Core Curriculum. The goal is for students to be literate and confident in their skills in ELA and Math by the time they graduate so they can apply their skills in continued education or in the workforce. In English and Language Arts students learn to read, write, speak and listen. The program is progressive with students building on their skill level yearly. These literacy goals are applied in all academic and technology courses.

In Mathematics, students focus on learning computation, geometry, algebra, statistics, proportional reasoning, and measurement. An emphasis is placed on students learning how to recognize which math tools should be used to solve a problem, being able to think logically, abstractly, and quantitatively and to be able to apply what they have learned to higher mathematics.
