Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Salamanca District Curriculum

The Common Core Curriculum ensures that students will learn the same basic skills across all schools in New York State. The curriculum applies to English & Language Arts, and Mathematics. The English & Language Arts curriculum focuses on reading, writing, listening and speaking using correct English. In an effort to prepare students for both college and the labor force, students read both informational text and important literature. An emphasis is placed on the development of critical analysis skills at all grade levels.

In Mathematics, students follow a prescribed curriculum learning computation, algebra, geometry, statistics and probability. The coursework is progressive and builds on student skills year by year. The focus is on ensuing that students become fluent in Mathematics by the end of High School and that they possess the necessary skills and confidence to take on higher math in college if they so choose and to utilize their skills in the workplace.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is taking an unusual approach to introducing art to children. At the museum website you will find several Sing a Long interactive games for children. The sing alongs are geared toward children ages 3 -7 and utilize easy well known songs which are paired with different works of art. The interactive program introduces artists and their work such as Cezanne, Degas, Renoir, and Van Gogh through the medium of music. After singing songs about the paintings, kids are encouraged to find different things in the paintings.
