Salem District and Curriculum

Salem City Schools is responsible for the public education of children in kindergarten through the twelfth grade. The district includes three elementary schools, one junior high school, and one high school. Each building offers a safe and secure environment in which children can learn and grow. All children are held to high expectations of achievement and behavior. These expectations are shared among teachers, staff members, and parents alike. To facilitate growth, children are provided with ample opportunities to learn, both in and out of the classroom. The district’s curriculum is relevant to the needs of living in the 21st century, and prepares students for the rigors of college attendance as well as entrance into the workforce.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Salem District Curriculum

The social studies curriculum introduces students to concepts in civics, governance, economics, geography and sociology. In economics, children investigate various economic issues that impact them as a consumer, as well as problems the nation’s economy has overcome in recent years. Students acquire a historical and social understanding of the stock market, banking, and economic forces. Students learn about the importance of saving their wages, including various ways they can improve their financial wellbeing.

Students in Salem participate in a technology curriculum that seeks to prepare students for the technology-driven world in which we live. Technology strands are incorporated into other academic areas to facilitate multiple uses of technology and technology understanding. Children learn about the development and nature of technology, including how computers and the Internet have evolved over time. Students learn how technology is an integral component of communication, and how it facilitates interaction between peoples within and between societies.

Chalk Talk: Test Prep Tips for the ACT

For many students, achieving a certain ACT score could mean the difference between gaining entrance to their college of choice or getting the financial aid they need to attend college. With so much pressure, it’s easy to make simple mistakes that negatively impact one’s score. If your child is scheduled to take the ACT, offer them these simple tips for success. First, remind them to read the directions and each question very carefully. Oftentimes mistakes are made because students don’t take the time to read them thoroughly. Second, explain to your child that they need to answer the easiest questions first. This not only builds up their confidence, but also ensures they have the fewest number of unanswered questions as time runs out. Lastly, your child needs to answer every single question. Scores on the multiple-choice sections of the test are based on the number of correct answers, so there is no penalty for answering incorrectly.
