Salisbury District and Curriculum

The Wicomico County Public School District is in the process of instituting the new Common Core Curriculum Standards in district schools. In 2012, the school system implemented Common Core Framework at the pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and first grade level. With the exception of Mathematics, the curriculum in all grades from first grade through high school is centered on Maryland’s State Curriculum. The new Common Core Mathematics Standards focuses on getting students to apply Math to real life situations and to use computational reasoning in solving math problems.

We currently cover the following Salisbury-area school district: Wicomico County Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Salisbury District Curriculum

The Mathematics curriculum for elementary school includes learning the basics of numbers, mathematical operations, measurements, and basic algebraic thinking and basic geometry. In the elementary grades the Math curriculum focuses on counting, basic geometry, numbers and operations, and algebraic thinking. In the middle school the curriculum adds to the foundations set in elementary school and adds equations and mathematical expressions, number systems, statistics and probability.

In English Language Arts, students at the elementary school level learn phonics, vocabulary, basic reading skills, reading comprehension, and writing. Middle school students are expected to extend their knowledge of reading and writing and be able to listen and to express themselves verbally. The core learning skills for English Language Arts at the high school level are for students to be able to demonstrate reading and writing skills through critical analysis, be able to compose writing that is appropriate for different types of content and purpose, show a control of the English language through correct grammar and syntax, and be able to evaluate the use of language in texts.
