Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Salt Lake City District Curriculum

The Common Core’s goals for Math are to produce proficient students who are capable of making sense of problems, reasoning abstractly, and being able to use mathematical patterns to apply math in the classroom and beyond. The district supports teachers in implementing these goals by offering pacing guides and other tools to help monitor how students are meeting standards, as well as benchmark assessments to make sure that students are meeting state standards.

In English Language Arts, the Common Core’s goals are to help them read and understand a broad variety of texts, be able to critically evaluate them, and write well for different audiences. The district also employs literacy coaches, certified teachers with a Reading Endorsement, a statewide qualification that certifies that they are experts in teaching literacy skills, to work with students. As students reach middle and high school, they focus on reading skills not only in their Language Arts classes, but in Social Studies, Math and Science classes.

Keeping Informed: Recent Salt Lake City Educational News

  • My Heart Challenge - Principals from Salt Lake City School District schools took on the challenge to improve their cardiovascular health this spring. Fifteen of them will be working with a local medical center to eat better, exercise more, and set an excellent example for their students. All of them will be cooperating with their schools to increase awareness about cardiovascular fitness and healthy habits.
  • Anti-Bullying Initiative - The school district has joined the national Flip the Script campaign to help end bullying and make school safer and better for all students. Key members of the city leadership, the school district, and the business community have come together to support this initiative, and to try to ensure that its message gets out there.
  • Hands-On Learning Grant - Indian Hills Elementary has an excellent hands-on science lab, and is now, because of a grant from a local education charity, been able to expand the science experiences it provides to more students. Hands-on science experiences are a great way to make students passionate about science and learning. Although the grant program, 100% For Kids Credit Union Education Foundation, usually supports core curriculum projects, it made an exception for Indian Hills’s excellent program.

Chalk Talk: Integrating Healthy Living Into Schools

More schools are integrating information and practices for healthy living into their programs. Some of this happens in the general curriculum, where students learn about health issues and what the consequences of lifestyle choices are. In addition, there are obviously health and physical education classes, where skills for healthy living are taught directly. However, schools are also integrating these issues into extracurricular areas, having students participate in physical challenges, using teachers and principals as models for healthy living, and setting goals for physical activity for all students. At every level of education, schools can be places where students learn to be healthy!
