Chalk Talk: Tips for Encouraging Journaling

Students are encouraged to keep journals almost from the time they learn how to write. This is a wonderful way to develop writing skills but many students become bored, or uninspired, after a while. Parents can help by giving children some hints as to what to write. Children may feel lost as far as who they are writing to, this can be assisted by suggesting they write it to one or two friends. This would be great for them to share at get-togethers. A Nature or Travel Journal is also another options. These journals build observational skills and descriptive writing. A sketch journal is an idea for those that enjoy drawing. With these suggestions, children can see that journaling can be as individual as they are.
