Educating Our Parents: Understanding the San Marcos District Curriculum

The Science curriculum at San Marcos Schools includes the study of the water cycle. In the first years of school, students learn the basics of this cycle. They learn that water evaporates, gathers in clouds and then it falls to the earth. This is gone into more detail as the student progresses through school. When they enter high school, these students can learn even more as they take classes in Earth Science or if they take classes in Ecology.

Students begin to learn the elements reading, in San Marcos Schools, by combining it with other subjects. When they are learning about famous Americans in Social Studies, they tie it in with non-fiction and biographical reading. By second grade, the students will have become fluent enough to read three chapter books within six weeks. Each book is connected by a theme. In middle school, they take the characters in a baseball book and create baseball cards for the main characters. These students are learning to connect reading with their everyday interests,

Keeping Informed: Recent San Marcos Educational News

  • Junior State of America - This organization is designed to help students become aware of events that are happening all around them. Most of the members would like to go into politics and government, foreign affairs, the law or education after graduation. Each chapter communicates with each other and participates in annual regional events. Then they can attend a state overnight convention each year where they can learn more about their area of interest and meet other students with their same interests.
  • FFA Activities - The FFA is a national organization that allows students to come together to learn more about their desired areas of agriculture. These students usually see themselves as working in a field of agriculture after graduation. This can include the areas of biology, ecology or agriculture.
  • DECA Club - DECA helps students become leaders or entrepreneurs in the areas of marketing, finance, hospitality and management. This preparation helps prepare them for life after graduation. This organization helps the students as they get ready for college or careers by building on the education these students receive in class. They then focus on business and connect it with the community.

Chalk Talk: Kindergarten Expectations

For many children, kindergarten is their first time with a structured learning experience. This can be scary for many, but it helps if the children and the parents know what expectations are desired. Each teacher may expect different things but in general they have similar ideas. First they want to know that the child will respect and follow the lead of the teacher and other authority figures. They also want a child to treat people and materials with respect and to understand and follow rules. The child should also understand that they should not hurt someone, either physically or emotionally. These are a few things to work on. It is also a good idea to talk with the teacher to see what expectations there are that are special to that teacher. This also opens the important door to parent-teacher communication.
