Chalk Talk: Why Learn History

There are a wide array of museums in Sandusky, Ohio as well as many curriculums that emphasize history in social studies courses. Why learn about the Great War of 1812? What about the history of our presidents of the US? Why study about great pioneers and their lives? Learning about the past can take us deeper into the beginnings of time, about our roots and can give us inclinations to what events transpired that led to today's beginnings. We see in the history of women that led the Independence Movement how the early roots of feminism paved the way for great freedom and liberation of today's feminist thought. Women are free to pursue higher education, better careers, and have access to voting as opposed to the early centuries where women were held back from attaining their full potential but were restricted to maintaining their roles as housewives. What can we learn about history that will help us understand the human condition? History is very well integrated in today's other subjects that our past helps us to see how it has shaped our present and the attitudes and practices that will change our future.
