Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Santa Clara District Curriculum

The curriculum in Language Arts covers a lot of territory: reading, writing, speaking and listening, media viewing, and research skills are all covered during a students education. In reading, the goal is to have students read a wide variety of genres so they are exposed to different styles and points of views and are able to analyze different types of texts. The development of a strong vocabulary is also focused on and students are expected to use context to determine meaning from words as well as recognize the authors' purpose.

The Math curriculum is aimed at building skills in numerical operations, algebra, geometry, statistics and probability, and preparing students for advanced math such as trigonometry or calculus. In the early years, the emphasis on pattern recognition helps students prepare for the work they will do with different types of equations in algebra. The focus on shape recognition and spatial awareness is intended to help students build the skills to work on geometry problems in high school.

Chalk Talk: What Is the Common Core?

The Common Core Standards are a nationally developed curriculum that aims to provide the learning objectives in Math and Language Arts that will comprehensively prepare students for all learning they do as well as the expectations they will need to meet in college and the workplace. The goal of the curriculum is to organize the subjects by strands, for instance in Math the topic of algebra is a strand, and to ensure that students meet learning objectives during each grade level that will allow them the depth and breadth of understanding needed to perform higher level work. Likewise, in Language Arts, reading comprehension and writing abilities are developed gradually but with a deeper ability to perform more complex work in the long run.
