Saraland District and Curriculum

Saraland City Schools follows the Alabama Standards of Learning in all subject areas. The curriculum moves from fundamentals to more complex learning in all subjects. For instance, Social Studies starts in Kindergarten and goes through 12th grade. In this subject, beginning in Kindergarten, the children are taught about basic skills, such as character traits, simple mapping, their past and their family’s changes over time. As the students go up in the grade levels, it becomes more advanced.

We currently cover the following Saraland-area school districts: Saraland City Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Saraland District Curriculum

In grade 3, the students look at the world and the physical characteristics of many ecosystems, countries, and continents. They begin to learn about changes over time, such as population shifts and how it has affected geography, and much more. By the middle school grades, learning becomes more isolated by actual countries and actual historical events, such as the Magna Carta, or the country of Greece and each strand is studied in detail. By high school, Social Studies becomes more centered upon certain events in time or concrete subject areas, such as World Geography, Government, or Sociology. The teaching of Social Studies in such a historical state is vital to the children growing into responsible adults.

Chalk Talk: Determining What Electives to Take

Usually, students take high school electives on subjects that interest them. More often, students are beginning to think about their career at an early age and by the time they are in the upper grades they want to begin focusing on the college preparatory courses in the area they plan on majoring in. Doing this can also help the student be sure that their decision has been made on what they want to do with their career choice. It is a good idea to take several different electives to explore many options.
