Saugeen Shores District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
In order for students to have an education that provides them with the necessary background of content and concept knowledge and a range of higher-order thinking skills, and relevant experiences in which to apply these, the Ontario Curriculum was developed. The curriculum consists of a series of subject-specific documents that detail grade level expectations and the anticipated outcomes for student knowledge. These are the subjects that Ontario bases their standardized tests on which are a requirement of graduation from secondary school. The broad literacy and learning strategies developed in the foundational subjects help students with all learning in the humanities, math and sciences, and social sciences.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Saugeen Shores District Curriculum
In Math, students learn fundamentals of mathematics across the different topics so that when they enter high school they are prepared for the Principles and Foundations of Math courses offered in grade 9. These classes go in-depth with Algebra and Geometry, and students learn about linear equations, algebraic expressions, geometric functions, and how they relate. Students can choose between an Academic or Applied version of this course, the difference being in the amount of theory and practical application brought in to instruction.
In English, the goal is to foster understanding and communication through texts that open up the world and personal expression that helps students find their voice. Students are meant to learn about the language, how to make connections between content, think critically and be able to recognize different points of view. Student achievement is gauged by their ability to demonstrate knowledge, critical thinking, meaningful connections, and application of knowledge. As they choose areas of specialization, their knowledge base will be drawn upon.

Chalk Talk: How to Connect with Teens
At times, parents and teens just cannot connect. There are some simple ways to make this easier. Parents can show an interest in things the teen loves. Perhaps they enjoy sports, or animals. Whatever their interest is, find out about it and then jump in. This will help to open the door to conversations. Spend some time doing something together with the teen. This may mean teaching them to make their favorite treats or renting a moving. Just by being together will help bring the teen out of their shell. Finally, when asking them questions, make sure to be specific. General questions can often be answered by a shrug of the shoulders. By asking what they did in English class, or how the team is preparing for the season, will help open up the teen’s world to the parent.
