Saugerties District and Curriculum
The town of Saugerties, New York, is part of the Saugerties Central School District. The district is made up of four elementary schools, one junior high school, and one high school. The schools of Saugerties base instruction in English Language Arts and mathematics on the expectations within the Common Core Standards. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Saugerties District Curriculum
Saugerties schools follow an English Language Arts curriculum that develops students’ ability to read and comprehend a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts. The curriculum builds on reading comprehension, using it to help develop students’ critical thinking, writing, research, media viewing, and discussion skills. Students are taught to write according to the writer’s workshop model where they develop ideas, learn ways to outline or graphically organize ideas, write, edit and revise, then finally present a well-crafted final presentation.
Saugerties schools follow a math curriculum that develops students’ ability to use mathematics knowledge to solve classroom and real-world problems. It does this by developing student’s knowledge of core mathematics concepts in the earliest grades and giving them the procedural skills to perform complex problem solving. They learn how to predict outcomes based on quantitative information and learn how to conduct mathematical forecasting or statistical analyses.

Keeping Informed: Recent Saugerties Educational News
- Visit from Education Commissioner - New York State Education Commissioner Dr. John King recently visited Saugerties. While in Saugerties, King visited with elementary and intermediate school students. He talked to the students about Common Core Standards and observed students as they worked on reading and math assignments.
- Board of Education News - Charles Schirmer was re-elected to the Saugerties Central School District Board of Education with 1,160 votes. Both Damion Ferraro and Krista Barringer were elected to the board for the first time. Ferraro received 1,110 votes. Barringer received 998 votes.
- District Budget News - Saugerties voters approved the Saugerties Central School District budget for the next school year. In all, 1,919 voters showed up a the polls. A total of 1,153 voters voted in favor of the budget.

He or she will worry about leaving family and friends behind. And, inevitably, he or she will worry about the future. As parents, we look back and see how little we knew when we were young and thought we had the future figured out. We should pass this knowledge on to our college age children. We should let them know that they don’t have to be on the career path yet, and that it is okay for them to take their time and explore different areas of interest. By doing this, we will help to soothe their nerves, and remind them that boring classes are not indicative of boring lives ahead of them.
