Chalk Talk: Middle School Social Studies

In the middle school students, generally, look at the history of the United States up to the Civil War. While studying this they develop a bank of names, places, dates and concepts from this time period. Included in this is the branches of government. Children also get an introduction to government and learn about the essential aspects of what it means to live in a democratic society. Students also explore the role of the Supreme Court in changing the manner in which the Constitution and its amendments are interpreted and understood. Hand-in-hand with this, students look at how dates they have memorized earlier worked together to create events today and how, by changing one thing, events could have turned out differently. Students also begin to research as a regular part of their curriculum. Parents can help children in this grade by demonstrating good time management skills and by making themselves available to answer questions. Even though each of these things are included in many of the states, there are some that will vary in content or expectations.
