Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sedalia District Curriculum
Implementation of the Common Core State Standards in mathematics results in a curriculum offering a deep conceptual understanding of mathematics to solve real-world problems. This requires a constant dual focus on practicing and understanding math in a variety of ways. Students benefit from a more narrow focus on priority standards, meaning they have more time to master the most important concepts in math.
The English/Language Arts curriculum for Sedalia students is based on the internationally-benchmarked Common Core State Standards, designed to prepare students for entry into college or a career after high school graduation. Although reading, writing, speaking, and listening are emphasized in the language arts standards, the expectation is that all teachers in all content areas share this responsibility of preparing students to be proficient communicators. The curriculum also places a great emphasis on informational text, writing arguments, and vocabulary.
