Sedona District and Curriculum

The curriculum followed by Sedona schools is carefully aligned with Arizona’s core content standards and the College and Career Readiness Program designed to prepare its students in Math and Language Arts/Literacy with the skills they will need in other core content classes, like History, Social Studies and Science. Reading, writing, listening and comprehension skills are critical for success in all academic programs. They also acquire critical thinking skills that will allow them to be academically successful.

We currently cover the following Sedona-area school district: Sedona Oak Creek Unified School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sedona District Curriculum

The Language Arts curriculum combines the skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, conducting research and viewing media so that students develop strong critical abilities in each. Writing is focused on in such a way that students are able to be creative and reflective, and to develop different voices for different purposes such as persuasion or writing for information. Reading is taught so that students are able to read fiction and non-fiction and develop the different types of analytic skills in each genre. An important aspect underlying both these strands is the acquisition of vocabulary and each year, and the ability to determine meaning in words and increasingly complex texts is emphasized.

Mathematics and Technology are also critical aspects of the core curriculum and students receive an education in these areas to prepare them for higher order mathematical skills. Students also receive education in computers and current technological advances to prepare them for college and the competitive global job market that awaits them after high school.

Chalk Talk: How Do I Help My Child's Language Development

The development of language begins when you start communicating with your baby. The first rule of helping your child's language development is to never talk to them in baby talk. Children learn to speak by listening you how you speak and if you talk baby talk, they will talk the same way. As your child understands more, he or she will use increasing levels of vocabulary. Ask questions that require critical thinking, such as questions about a story you've just read out loud. Give simple instructions to your child about a task that you want her to do. Use one step instructions to begin with, slowly adding steps as her skills at following directions. Pay attention what your child has to say, having an interactive conversation. Always remember that children watch everything you do and listen to everything you say and you are their first teacher in language development and communication.
