Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Seguin District Curriculum

The Science Curriculum at Seguin Schools show students how to use their senses, safely, to explore the world around them. They learn how to first look at an object and then use descriptive words to tell about it. They then go on to find out how to use their other senses, one by one, to go more in-depth in their descriptions. As they progress, they also learn how to conduct and even design their own experiments, and the process of investigating natural scientific phenomenon.

The English curriculum at Seguin Schools begins by introducing students to the basics in writing and reading. They then demonstrate to the students how these two subjects work together. As they learn about plot in reading, the students then begin to show their understanding by creating plots in their own writing. Students also learn about literary devices in fiction and text features used in non-fiction to hone their comprehension, analysis and evaluation skills.

Chalk Talk: Resources for Budding Astronomers

Celebrating a birthday at school can be fun for most children. In the past, parents would bake some wonderful treat to share with the class, but today there are so many more options. Just make sure to check with the teacher first. One option that combines academics with a treat is to bring in the ingredients, in individual portions, for the children to have at their desks. They can learn order, and following directions. If the school has a garden, maybe a pizza garden party would be a good idea. Another idea, is to allow the child to choose a gift for the classroom or to throw a book party for the class. With these ideas as a starting point, and by using imagination, parents and children can come up with many unique ideas.
