Selkirk District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
The Lord Selkirk School Division follows the K-12 subject-area guidelines laid out by Manitoba Education. The guidelines are rigorous and call upon students to perform increasingly complex work each year. It is also responsive to the changes in the world and has added subjects such as Sustainable Development studies, International Exchange, and Aboriginal Education so that students can learn about important topics beyond the core. Students are encouraged to determine which pathway best suits their post-secondary goals and to try courses in the arts, engineering, and career-based electives.
We currently cover the following Selkirk-area school district: Lord Selkirk School Division.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Selkirk District Curriculum
The Math curriculum is laid out according to the major topics such as numerical operations, number systems, algebra and patterning, geometry and measurement, functions, models and quantitative data analysis. Each year, students learn new problem-solving skills in each of these areas which compounds into the ability to solve difficult problems. Mathematical literacy, including both being able to understand what problems are asking and how to communicate mathematical thinking, is emphasized as well.
The English language arts curriculum helps students learn how to read analytically and convey themselves effectively both in writing and speaking. Students learn about the craft and structure of literary works and explain how that helps the author make meaning in the text. They also develop vocabulary and language skills that helps them develop their own voice in writing. The writing curriculum has two overarching goals - first, to help students learn to write for a variety of purposes, and second, to provide them with a process-oriented approach to writing well.

Chalk Talk: Grants in Education
Manitoba Education regularly takes the lead on searching for grant funding for programs they want to implement throughout the province. These programs offer students high-quality learning experiences in areas that are emerging as 21st century career opportunities or which strengthen existing, successful programs. Among the grants that Manitoba Education is working on are Education for Sustainable Development Grant, the French Second Language Revitalization Program, the Intensive Newcomer Support (INS) Grant, Music Month Grants, and Scientists in the Classroom Grants. These grants cover many different types of programs that are important to many students and also demonstrate an awareness of the types of services and supports, as with the Skills Strategy Equipment Enhancement Fund Grant, that individual school districts should have to help all students achieve their best.
