Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Seymour District Curriculum

Elementary students are taught in subject areas that include mathematics, language arts, science, social studies, physical education, music, and art. The subject areas along with world languages carry through middle and high school with advanced coursework being offered for those students who meet the requirements. Individual benchmarks and detailed learning strands are clearly spelled out for each grade level in the areas of mathematics, language arts/English, social studies, and science aligning with all national and state core standards.

Using the Connecticut Common Core State Standards, students in the Seymour Public School District are assessed using the Connecticut Smarter Balanced Assessment in Grade 3 through 8 and 11. In addition, students are assessed using the CMT/CAPT Science in grades 5, 8, and 10. The district supports the career and college readiness initiatives for its students.

Chalk Talk: Finding a Quality Tutor

Choosing a quality tutor to help your child is important for their academic success. There are several ways to find a good tutor for your child. A common way is to ask a friend or family member for a recommendation of a tutor or tutoring center they may have used in the past. Because they may have first-hand experience with these individuals or organizations, their recommendations can save your time and energy. Most cities have tutoring companies or educational companies that can help place your child with a quality tutor in their area of need. Be sure to check references if dealing with an unknown tutor before proceeding. Make sure the tutor is a good fit for your child and can adapt to your child’s learning style. Talk to your child after the tutoring sessions to make sure that learning gains are being made and their needs are being met in order to maximize success!
