Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Shawano District Curriculum

High school students in Shawano can learn a second language as part of the district’s world languages curriculum. An essential aspect of the curriculum is acquiring speaking and writing skills. Students take part in oral presentations during which they must present information in the language under study. Giving speeches, providing directions, and acting out culturally significant events are just a few of the activities in which students participate to improve their speaking skills. They also create their own short stories, writing out the details of the story in the language of study.

Shawano’s high school agriculture, food, and natural resources curriculum introduces learners to important topics related to working with animals. Students identify characteristics that animals have developed in order to survive in the natural world. The manners in which humans have used those characteristics for domestication are explored as well. Learners examine the development of the animal industry and analyze its influence in job growth in Wisconsin. Various agricultural animal species are investigated, with students learning how to classify animals using Linnaeus’s taxonomy.

Chalk Talk: How to Choose a Tutor

One of the first things parents need to consider when looking for a tutor for their child is to find someone with content-specific knowledge. While some tutors have expertise in multiple subject areas, it is most prudent to find someone with a degree in the subject and experience teaching and tutoring in that subject as well. Additionally, while someone may have a gift for teaching others, they may not have the content knowledge your child needs. Also, the personality of the tutor is an important consideration. Tutors need to be helpful, but not coddle students. Likewise, tutors need to be firm and have high expectations, but at the same time, they need to be nurturing and approachable. Communication skills are also extremely important, so you and your child know what to exactly what to expect and when. It's always important to speak with prospective tutors in advance of tutoring sessions to make sure they understand the goals for each child.
