Shawnee District and Curriculum

The district curriculum closely follows state and national standards. The standards consist of the skills and knowledge that students should gain during their education in each subject and provides assessable targets to ensure students meet the learning goals. Through critical thinking and problem solving, students build a strong background in reading, language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Technology is readily used for research and as a learning tool with students.

We currently cover the following Shawnee-area school district: Shawnee Mission School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Shawnee District Curriculum

The curriculum is designed so that all students have achievable standards within each subject to meet; such as being able to perform different problem-solving strategies in Math. For gifted math students, a pre-algebra program is also offered in Grade 6. In the middle grades, students may elect to take advanced courses in English, mathematics, and science if desired. The middle school activity program also offers students the chance to participate in sports, clubs, and field trips.

Through a strong core curriculum and multiple electives in industrial arts, humanities, music, art, family and consumer science, and foreign languages, the high school works to support the individual and career goals of students. Special programs in Naval Science (NJROTC), teacher education, and community service assist in the development of career opportunities. The Quick Step program also gives students the opportunity to take college courses for credit through local colleges.

Chalk Talk: The Middle School Years

One of the most turbulent times in your child’s life (and yours as well!) is during middle school. Children ride a continual wave of emotions as they begin school with schedules and lockers, raging hormones, and sporadic growth spurts. They adjust to changing bodies and attitudes towards their friends, you, and life in general. Fortunately, you can help your child navigate these tumultuous waters and maintain your sanity. Though easier said than done, remain patient with your child. Because of drastic emotional changes and growth, his behavior may be completely erratic and unpredictable, so do not expect that your child will exercise the same judgment or experience the same emotional responses as you. Your child may also feel insecurities about his or her new body as it changes and adjusts during puberty. Assure your child that this experience is normal. Also emphasize that we all experience changes in our bodies at different times, so help your child with frustration or embarrassment about their changes.
