Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sheffield Lake District Curriculum
The social studies curriculum in Sheffield Lake begins in elementary school where students learn the basics of geography. Learners explore various geographic elements in both Ohio and the United States. Students learn how to read and interpret maps and use both cardinal and intermediate directions to determine the location of a specific geographic characteristics. The value of natural resources is analyzed, with students identifying the ways in which Ohio’s lands are used for economic gain. The relationship between physical geography and economy is also explored.
High school science students have the opportunity to explore various subjects, including biology. The biology curriculum begins with an in-depth study of heredity. Students learn about cellular genetics, mutations, and other genetic mechanisms of inheritance. Students also explore the structure and function of DNA in cells. The mechanisms of evolution are also examined. Learners acquire an understanding of natural selection, genetic drift, and gene flow. Students also study the history of life on earth and evaluate how life forms have adapted to their environment in order to survive.
