Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sheridan District Curriculum

By the time students graduate high school, in English Language Arts they will be able to understand other’s point of views and backgrounds, know the content well, show independence in reading and conducting research, use technology correctly, be able to back up what they do with evidence, and tailor what they do based on who will be looking at it. Written work is a significant portion of the curriculum, and students develop processes for writing and understand that they may address different audiences in their writing.

In Math, students learn to use tools correctly, be able to solve different styles of problems, watch for and use structure, solve quantitative and abstract problems, be consistent when solving problems, and model quantitative thought. Problem solving and reasoning tools and technology are emphasized in the math curriculum at all levels. The use of manipulatives and technology are greatly encouraged by the staff to the students. These skills will follow students in college and their careers.

Chalk Talk: Nutrition in Schools

Many schools are pushing more nutritious meals for their students. Numerous schools also offer free and reduced breakfast and lunch to students who qualify. Countless students from low-income families do not get proper, if any meals at home, so it is important for schools to provide this basic need for many children. Food can give students a healthy mind and body that will help them do their best in the classroom. Healthy meal plans can also help students avoid being included in the country’s obesity epidemic. Well-fed students are learning students.
