Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sidney District Curriculum

In the Mathematics curriculum, the students are exposed to written problems, or “story” problems. The students must be able to use their reading and comprehension skills to integrate with this math skill, and need to be able to decipher which operation to use to solve these types of problems. The students will also learn how to figure out, by way of visually representing or writing the proper way to estimate and predict an answer before solving the problem in full.

In K-12 English Language Arts, the students learn material such as research. The students, when learning how to research are taught how to differentiate between websites that are factual and those that are not as credible, and they are taught to use a multitude of sources, such as biographies, autobiographies, informational texts, reference texts, online sources, interviews, data collection, and personal knowledge. When researching, the students are to know the purpose and thesis of what they are writing about, as well as learning about.

Chalk Talk: Determining Reading Levels of Students

There are many methods of testing that the teachers and the reading specialists use to determine a student’s reading level. Reading levels tell the teacher more than just a level, but they give the teacher information such as: why they are making mistakes, if they are using meaning when reading and can comprehend their fluency and pacing, and their phonetic skills. Using the testing, teachers are able to focus on what the student really needs in terms of reading, so they may differentiate the instruction for each child.
