Sierra Vista District and Curriculum

Over the years, the Sierra Vista Unified School District has seen an enormous amount of change and growth. During these years of development, the district has remained steadfast in their mission to “develop responsible, independent, life-long learners.” The Sierra Vista schools fulfill that mission by providing an enriched, broad-based curriculum at every grade level. They have completed extensive work in formulating their curriculum, based upon the Standards of the Arizona Department of Education, but built according to their student’s and teacher’s needs, as they feel that they must “build learning communities through committed collaboration and
communication.”

We currently cover the following Sierra Vista-area school district: Sierra Vista Unified School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sierra Vista District Curriculum

Each elementary school, the middle school and high school, follow the Common Core State Standards and are focused on English Language Arts and Mathematics. However, the schools also follow and often exceed the standards in all other subject
areas: Science, Social Studies, Computer Technology, Physical Education/Health, Music and Fine Arts.

The Sierra Vista schools also provide differentiated learning programs to allow every student, regardless of their need or ability,
with an outstanding educational experience. Each and every child in the school system experiences an excellent education that
challenges the student to develop their individual talents and abilities to their utmost. The mission of the school district is to
maintain their level of academic excellence, to make sure that every student is at grade level or above, and that every student
graduates prepared to live, work and succeed in a global community; for Sierra Vista students are “learners today… leaders
tomorrow.”

Keeping Informed: Recent Sierra Vista Educational News

  • Buena High School Band Director Recognized - Dr. Duane Chun was recently featured and his career celebrated in a national magazine for music educators entitled The Instrumentalist. The article was written by Editor James M. Rohner who showcased Dr. Chun's 20-year career as Band Director at Buena High School in the Sierra Vista Unified School District. Rohner discusses in his article, "Learning to Read a Rehearsal: An Interview with Duane Chun," all of the methods used to effectively and successfully motivate 200 students in the band program, including techniques to get the teenage marching band students moving at 6:30 in the morning. Congratulations and kudos to Dr. Chun on his national recognition.
  • Third Grade and Kindergarten Students Team Up for Reading - They are called Reading Buddies at Carmichael Elementary School in the Sierra Vista Unified School District, and they think that reading is awesome. One time per month the students in kindergarten sit with their third grade Reading Buddy to work on a project, such as creating a book, making a holiday gift, or just celebrating reading. The teachers have promoted this program as they feel that the students encourage each other to improve in their reading skills, and increase their love of reading.
  • Bringing Cheer to the Community - Early in December, students from every school in the Sierra Vista Unified School District participate in the community's annual Christmas Parade. The Sierra Vista Chamber of Commerce hosted the day's events and hundreds attended. This year, the younger students from Carmichael Elementary School, some as young as Kindergarten, rode in the back of a trailer singing holiday tunes all along the parade route. Among the first to walk the parade route was the Joyce Clark Middle School Band, and the school's choirs followed-up not too far behind singing Christmas carols and waving to the crowds. Next came the older students, the Buena High School Choirs sang out Christmas songs as they walked the parade, and the Buena High School Student Council members, who decorated their float in just a few days, won the Judge's Award for Outstanding Design for their entry. Congratulations for all of the Sierra Vista Students who participated in this community event.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Routine for Young Students

Learning is a structured task, and so it benefits a student to have a schedule which supports their learning goals. A schedule that provides for extracurriculars, homework, projects, family time, and free time can be flexible. The goal is to have a pattern that a child can count on each week when they know that they will have time to take care of their responsibilities. Building that into the routine can ease a lot of stress for a child and will help develop their time management and study skills.
