Simcoe District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
The Ontario Curriculum was designed so that student learning is based in core academic knowledge upon which students are able to develop interests and abilities which will prepare them for a future which they choose. Each academic course is organized by grade-level expectations and the yearly progression builds the skills that enable the higher-order thinking and understanding that emerges from a well-rounded education. The subject of English teaches students how to read critically, write with purpose, and communicate effectively. In History, students learn about major concepts of government, politics, economics, religion, society and culture, and begin to recognize patterns and lessons about how the world works.
We currently cover the following Simcoe-area school districts: Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board and Grand Erie District School Board.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Simcoe District Curriculum
In Math and Science, the processes associated with verifying information and solving problems are taught through the various topics in each subject. Students learn how to use mathematic information to think through outcomes, thereby becoming effective problem-solvers and decision-makers. In Science, the principles of verifying theories are paramount in the formation of critical thinkers. Core content is taught throughout, and there are many creative learning opportunities offered.
Upon the academic foundation provided by these subjects, students have many different pathways they can choose from in support of their future goals. Students can take a complement of courses that prepare them for a general liberal arts education at college, or pursue more specialized post-secondary options. The design of the curriculum centers on this aspect of student choice and decision-making so that each student has a clear set of post-secondary opportunities in their future.

Chalk Talk: Preteens
The time between childhood and teenage years are often referred to as the preteen time. This is an interesting time in child development. The child may want to hang out with their friends, while acting cool, yet they play with toys at home. During this time they are looking for different behaviors. Friendships take on a new significance, and kids begin to spend a lot of time talking over everything with their friends. It may seem to parents that their kids don’t want to talk to them anymore, but parents need to keep this line of conversation open as preteens move into their teenager years, and help them adjust to the changes they experience.
