Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sioux City District Curriculum

Elementary school math introduces the basics of counting, numbers and early algebraic thinking. Science instruction in Sioux City elementary schools teaches students to think of science as a form of inquiry, and allows them to experiment in designing simple tests. Literacy goals for area elementary students include reading and writing clearly and effectively according to their appropriate grade level.

Middle school students build off their foundation to become more sophisticated thinkers. Math instruction includes the beginnings of statistics, probability and geometry. In Science classes, students design experiments and learn the basics of chemistry and physics. Language Arts classes provide students with the opportunity to read more challenging texts and write persuasive essays about them.

Chalk Talk: Promoting Reading at Home

Kids who read more often do better in school. But, like most academic habits, home life has a bigger influence on success than any experiences at school. That's why it's important for parents to instill a love of reading in their kids even before they start school. Some tips for getting literacy going at home include reading to your child, going to the library as a family and make a habit of writing a lot - such as emails and notes within the family.
