Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sitka District Curriculum
Science education is inquiry-based. From the early grades through high school, students are involved in developing questions and using scientific methods to find answers. For example, third graders learn about the salmon life cycle by visiting a local hatchery and examining water samples to find the macro invertebrates that salmon eat.
The Sitka elementary schools place special emphasis on early reading to help all children become proficient readers who appreciate books. Middle school Language Arts students hone their nonfiction and creative writings, learn to debate, and create a monthly school newspaper. Through such activities, the goals of literacy and communication development are brought about.
