The Ontario Curriculum is used in the local schools and provides an extensive overview of what students are expected to learn in their subjects each year. This framework, which is referred to as standards-based, also allows for the development of innovative programs which are designed to thoroughly prepare students to meet their post-secondary goals. The curriculum also calls upon students to demonstrate their knowledge and abilities through assessments of all types. Beyond the EQAO assessments, there are also project-based assessments that teachers use in all subjects to give students an opportunity to apply what they have learned in their courses to their own original scholarship.

In Math, students build problem-solving skills from their introduction to numerical operations, measurement, and other basic topics during elementary school. Students amass a background in mathematic knowledge with which they can perform abstract and logical reasoning. The Science curriculum helps students develop their means of understanding the world. Students learn about natural phenomenon and scientific laws, and are also introduced to the process of forming and testing hypotheses and validating theories.

Integrated learning is when more than one subject is used to teach a lesson or concept. Using art and history together to help students understand people and their society at a certain point in history can enliven history for many students. Science and history is another area where integrated learning commonly occurs because of the ways in which science has transformed our society. More advanced subjects, such as AP Math and AP Government may integrate subject areas to study the census, using both a mathematic approach to the statistics and a government approach to the data. Integrated learning can be very effective in making subjects relevant and comprehensible for students.
