Chalk Talk: How to Help A Struggling Writer

Do your children act like they’re in pain when they have a writing assignment to do? Do they sit and think, then sit and think some more, until they’re exhausted from thinking of an idea? Give them spurts of writing practice and guidance that won’t stress them out! Often, having children write for 3 minutes straight, and then giving them time to share what they wrote is invaluable in helping kids open their minds to writing. Three minutes is a time frame that is not overwhelming for children to keep their attention to the task. Students should write as much as they can about a given prompt, every morning when they enter the classroom, to open their minds and get them ready to think and learn.
