Keeping Informed: Recent Smyrna Educational News
- Imagine Learning - Smyrna Elementary was spotlighted in a short video describing a program that has significantly improved the progress of students, called Imagine Learning. They were featured because they chose to pilot this innovative program, and because their results were so positive. Using technology to customize learning to each student’s level and his or her individual progress allows for differentiated instruction, and the children love it. Students can practice skills (although the kids feel like they’re playing), and they come into school ready to learn.
- Reward Schools - Ten schools in the Rutherford School District scored in the top 5% in the state of Tennessee, either in student performance or in student progress, or both. Teachers in the district attribute this accomplishment in part to their professional learning communities. Teachers collaborate very often, to ensure consistent yet innovative teaching within the district, and this creates an environment that celebrates students and their power to achieve.
- Education Commissioner Visit - The education commissioner, Kevin Huffman, visited Rutherford County and gave a short address at a kick-off for teachers for another school year. He praised them for their skill and dedication in accommodating over 1,000 new students in the area. While growing with the demand, this district also has the 3rd highest ELL population in the state. The commissioner looks to Rutherford County schools to take a leadership role in the state, to achieve statewide education goals.
Chalk Talk: How to Help A Struggling Writer
Do your children act like they’re in pain when they have a writing assignment to do? Do they sit and think, then sit and think some more, until they’re exhausted from thinking of an idea? Give them spurts of writing practice and guidance that won’t stress them out! Often, having children write for 3 minutes straight, and then giving them time to share what they wrote is invaluable in helping kids open their minds to writing. Three minutes is a time frame that is not overwhelming for children to keep their attention to the task. Students should write as much as they can about a given prompt, every morning when they enter the classroom, to open their minds and get them ready to think and learn.
